Think of Hollywood, and “ugly” probably doesn’t come to mind, but this Friday Hollywood celebrities are flying into the Bay Area to judge and emcee the World’s Ugliest Dog Contest at the Sonoma-Marin Fair.

Judges include “That ’70s Show” television star Christina Moore, celebrity veterinarian Karen “Doc” Halligan and Vertical Horizon lead singer Matt Scannell. They will join fair board member Brian Sobel.

Truth be told, I think most competition shows are boring. Don’t get me wrong, I understand the appeal of shows like AMERICAN IDOL, SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE, LAST COMIC STANDING, DANCING WITH THE STARS, and THE BIGGEST LOSER. I just happen to grow tired of watching people sing, dance, tell jokes, or cry about how fat they are over and over and over and over and over again.

Except that is for AMERICA’S GOT TALENT, that is, which continues to amaze me week after week by allowing anyone with any talent to compete. Sure, it’s got many of the things I list above, like singing, dancing, the occasional comedian, and sometimes too many sob stories, but there’s also sword swallowing, hand whistling, magic acts, and genital dare-deviling… seriously. All the various talents of the world can join the fray, but even after several years of tuning in I have yet to see anyone with a great technology talent appear on that stage.
