A search on Google for Paris Hilton or Britney Spears would show you an amazing number of websites. That these websites and tabloids in print media, most of which survive by telling the readers the love affairs and idiosyncrasies of various celebrities, generate a considerable amount of revenue tells us that there are people who crave for this kind of news. “Sex sells” is an old saying; but it seems to be relevant in all ages.

Generally, people are curious to know more and more details about celebrities. Since they always remain in public glare, it is inevitable that the life of a celebrity is almost like an open book. Other than pop culture references, like advertising Coke in a film or ribbing the current star, films rarely delved into current political issues. Hollywood’s main foray into political issues was always based on dead presidents or fictitious political/legal dramas. It seems now that Hollywood is not satisfied with entertaining me; now they want to educate me, influence me. It is, of course, no secret that Hollywood attempts to, with great effect, manipulate us. They do so with a brilliant John Williams score or phenomenal scenery. They show us what we want to see: the good guys winning and the bad guys losing. They play to our emotions, which is exactly why we go to the movies. (at least it is for me) We, as an audience, fall for this willingly. We succumb to it like we do sleep after a 12-hour road trip with 2 kids.

Hollywood’s is no longer taking us to places we have never been or dare to dream to go to. The movie theater is no longer a safe have for the realities of everyday life. Studios now see fit to insert their own political views in films and Box Office receipts reflect the trend. Revenues for 2005 are down a estimated 7.5% behind 2004′s revenues of 24.1 billion dollars, which includes DVD sales and rentals.

It is of no surprise that celebrities will freely scandal up the tabloids, and every time you turn around, you see a celebrity in the tabloids, daily. Sometimes you have downright celebrity jerk moments even! What is the fascination with daily celebrity gossip? After all, some people have to log on to multiple websites every day to get their fill of celebrity gossip. Not to mention the scandals. Oh, those celebrities scandals.

If it makes you wonder why these privileged folks would succumb to this behavior, take a step back and look at the pressure of their lives, always being under the scrutiny of the public eye. Ok, granted, that is one side of the fence, now how about the other side? It’s their responsibility to set an example, being a public figure after all. Have you ever found yourself enthralled by what goes on in the personal lives of celebrities? Well, you aren’t alone. A huge percentage of people all over the world look forward to opening up their magazine of choice and reading about what the famous are up to. In what new ways has Tom Cruise embarrassed himself? Has Britney Spears given birth yet? Are Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie sleeping in separate beds? For some reason, many humans find these things to be interesting.

But you have to ask yourself, why is it that people are entertained hearing about celebrity gossip? If Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes are having marital troubles, what makes it more interesting than your neighbor’s regular fights? Is it because the celebrities have more money, and therefore anything that happens to them is more important? After all, if I want to hear about marital troubles, I don’t have to look very far.

I have never been that interested in what the “celebrities” were doing. I was too busy living my own exciting life filled with my relationships, work, and moving, gaining weight; losing weight among all the other stuff we all go through. But one day my cousin sent me an email titled “Latest Movie Star Exposed!” with reference to a celebrity that was in one of the latest movies. It showed her doing a very scandalous act that was not only funny but astonishing, it made me think, my life is nothing like these famous people!

I was hooked. I wanted to see what they were all doing. Who they were marrying, sleeping with, which ones were pregnant, who had what and would they be around to star in another favorite movie. I also love to search to see who is wearing what and what the newest fashions will be. After all, we know that if Nicole Kidman walked down the street wearing a paper sack, we would all want one. And, if Jennifer Aniston colored her hair purple and green, there would be woman everywhere doing it.
